First came a sweater; then came socks, a hat and mittens. Now, since it’s much too warm for any of that stuff, a new sundress.

I just received the following email from Warm Up Cincinnati:

"We’ve just received a request from Vitas Hospice for afghans knitted in Red, white, and blue for all the Veterans in their care for Memorial Day (just weeks away). If you can help, please send squares in any shade of red, blue, cream or white. Feel free to mix the patterns, yarns, designs in any combination you want. I’ll also be inserting a purple square in each afghan, so we need some purple squares, too.

There are 56 Veterans total being cared for by Vitas Hospice, therefore they need 56 afghans. One local knitting group has already committed to 20, so that leaves 36 afghans still needed. The good news is that they only need half-sized afghans, so instead of our usual 49-square/afghan, we are making 24-square/afghans that will rest at the foot of their beds and later be used as lap blankets.

All afghans will be in some variation of red/white/blue with one purple square. (If we get too many purple squares, I put extra purple in each afghan). I did the math…and we need a total of 324 squares to make 36 half-sized afghans. I already have 72 squares of red, white and blue (including 4 purple) on hand. That leaves 252 squares needed: 220 of those need to be in red, white or blue. 32 in purple. Barbara Bradshaw of Purls & Chains is focusing on the purple ones, so what I really, really need are red, white and blue squares. I have distributed all of the yarn that Hospice bought for us and most of my own that matched those colors. I can go buy more if anyone needs yarn donated. I know several of you have already gone through your own stash pulling those colors out – thank you! Anything you can do will greatly help. Hospice would like to lay these afghans on each Veteran’s bed on Memorial Day (May 28^th) to honor them. I know this is a huge undertaking, but I really don’t want to leave any Veteran out, so any help you can give will be greatly appreciated."

Warm Up Cincinnati is dedicating 2012 to US Veterans, launching a program to provide afghans for each one in the tri-state area. From their newest newsletter:

"Whether retired and suffering from an illness, active duty and injured, or homeless ‐ U.S. Veterans in need are getting our version of a Purple Heart. WUC is a “neighbor helping neighbor” charity. We believe charity begins at home, whether you consider “home” your family and friends, your church, your neighborhood, or your country. Similar to the pact and assurance given by U.S. Service Members, WUC will leave no one behind in our quest to comfort Veterans in need, because they have given us so much."

Please prayfully consider providing 7 x 9-inch purple blanket squares to this beautiful cause. Or, if you'd rather, feel free to send me any worsted-weight purple yarn - any amount - which will then be used to make squares. Thank you!

Pattern: Matinee Sweater from The Expectant Knitter
Yarn: Bernat Baby Softee in cream
Needles: US size 3
Modifications:
The pattern calls for a straight stockinette body; instead I added a three-stitch ribbing border to each side, then created a botton border which matched the top. Overall I really enjoyed this pattern. Even found some ribbon to match the booties I bought. :)
